Relational - The Beauty of Complexity (2018)

... illustrates the relationships between entities, pursuing my approach of constructing more complex structures by assembling simpler ones or subsections.

Coming from a background in systems and network analysis, I have always been fascinated by the aesthetics of visualized networks and matrices (e.g., my project 'Binary'). By hand-drawing the visual representations of these relational datasets, I aim to show that these networks and systems are unique, just as each of us is unique, despite sharing a set of similar features. Another purpose of creating these hand-drawn representations is to engage in a contemplative process.

While my work may be influenced by Mark Lombardi's art, my networks primarily depict causal relationships. One focus will be the investigation of the interrelations between art, science, technology, and society. My initial project idea concerned climate change, where I intended to create Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) in collaboration with climate scientists. However, I am currently more intrigued by issues like big data, digitalization, and the transformation of society.

I am also very interested in experimenting with different forms of visualization and diverse aesthetics. Images and photos of my new experiments may follow soon. The image below, created in 2008, shows the interrelations of parasites and African culture, specifically focusing on sleeping sickness and Nagana. It combines various forms of knowledge, including different sciences and indigenous/traditional knowledge, into a single model.

The development of FCM and relational diagrams as an artistic method is supported by a one-year scholarship from the state of Carinthia.

Images and photos of new experiments will be shared as they become available.
